I mean it when I say all of us. As you may know, June is LGBT Pride Month. In keeping with my mission of ensuring equality and opportunity for all, I recently co-introduced the Social Security and Marriage Equality (SAME) Act, which would guarantee same-sex couples a level playing field when applying for Social Security benefits.

Equality for the LGBT community is personal for me. At 15 it was a no-brainer. I knew bigotry and discrimination were wrong and against our core values, so I gave my first LGBT rights speech in high school. And I also got to witness my brother, who came out to our family in the 1970s, marry his husband a few years ago. I’m fighting for them and for all other same-sex couples who deserve to live their lives with the same privacy, dignity, and equal treatment under the law that heterosexual couples are afforded.
