Dear Friend,
In case you missed this morning’s news, Governor Cuomo made an important
announcement, unveiling a three-point plan to end the AIDS epidemic in
New York State by 2020. This historic program is designed to “bend
the curve” of those with HIV infections so that we decrease new
HIV infections to the point where the number of people living with HIV
in New York State is reduced for the first time. The end of the AIDS epidemic
in New York will occur when the total number of new HIV infections has
fallen below the number of HIV-related deaths.
The plan is a multifaceted approach involving better treatment for those
living with HIV and wider use of drugs that can help prevent the spread
of the disease.
In a New York Times article this morning, Dr. Anthony S. Fauci, a leading
AIDS researcher, praised the governor’s plan noting it would be
a “national model.” Charles King, a leading advocate for people
affected by AIDS, said, “We’re just ecstatic that New York
is going to be the first political jurisdiction in the world to publicly
declare a goal of ending AIDS as an epidemic.”
Read more about the plan in today’s copy of The New York Times.
Sincerely,
Andrew Cuomo Committee
