ARE KIDS OVEREATING?

More kids with diabetes

From the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, I’m Ira Dreyfuss with HHS HealthBeat.

A study finds more young people are being diagnosed with diabetes. Researchers collected eight years of data on young people from birth to age 19 for type 1 diabetes, an autoimmune disease, and ages 10 to 19 for type 2, which can develop from lifestyle factors.

At the Colorado School of Public Health, researcher Dana Dabelea:

“We’ve observed this important dramatic increase in the burden of both type 1 and type 2 diabetes, perhaps a higher increase than we were expecting, 21 percent increase in type 1 and 30 percent increase in type 2.”

The study says obesity might drive some of the increase in type 2 diabetes.

The study in the Journal of the American Medical Association was supported by the National Institutes of Health.
