When I visited the home of Emily and her mother last summer, her mother said she barely has enough food to give her kids three meals a day. Despite the fact that she has a full-time job as a nursing assistant, the family's food budget is so tight that she's "budgeting down to the calorie," and there's no room for second helpings, leftovers, or snacks. Emily and her siblings can't go into the refrigerator between meals.
Stories like these are shocking, and they are happening across the nation. We need to help make sure kids like Emily get the food they need in the summer.
