By standing in the way of renewing emergency unemployment insurance, Speaker Boehner and GOP obstructionists are pulling the rug out from 127,000 New Yorkers and more than a million Americans.
They allowed this critical lifeline to expire just days after Christmas, and now, they're blocking it again.
They're taking away benefits that tide people over while they search for a new job. They're forcing some families to choose between keeping the heat on and putting food on the table. They're hurting families and undermining our fragile economic recovery through the same old partisan sniping and brinkmanship.
This isn't right.
Right now, I'm joining with members of Congress to send a very clear message to congressional Republicans: Extend emergency unemployment insurance now. We can't pull the rug out from under American families when they need it the most.
Not extending unemployment insurance will impact 127,000 New Yorkers and more than a million Americans who are searching for jobs. And not extending unemployment insurance will hurt our economic recovery and by some estimates could lead to more than 300,000 jobs being lost.
These are our friends and our neighbors. We can't turn our backs on them when they need us the most.
Let's send congressional Republicans a loud and clear message to extend these benefits that families are relying on.
