Become a Mentor
I write to invite you to become a mentor to a current student and/or recent
graduate of Brooklyn Law School. The Mentor Program is designed to match
experienced attorneys with upper class students who express an interest
in a given practice area. The program provides students with a valuable
link between the law school experience and the practicalities of a legal
career by creating one-on-one relationships with experienced graduates.
Last year, we expanded our program to include new graduates as mentees
and will continue to do so. In light of the current legal market, we think
it is even more critical that our recent graduates are supported by the
greater BLS community as they navigate their transition to legal practice.
Creating a meaningful mentor/mentee relationship can be accomplished through
a variety of activities. Invite your mentee to a firm function, in-house
training or to watch a trial or court conference. Take your mentee to
a bar association meeting or event. Meet for breakfast or lunch. Or simply
be regularly available by phone or email to discuss both substantive and
career related issues. Additionally, the law school offers a number of
programs during the year on a variety of legal topics which are good events
to attend together. Keep in mind, however, that for current students,
this is not a work/study or internship program. Students should not be
asked to perform research or other work.
We require our student participants to attend an orientation program in
early September before we pair them with a mentor. The only specific event
we ask Mentors to attend is the Mentor/Mentee Reception which will be held on
Tuesday, October 7th from 6:30-8:00 p.m. at the offices of Cadwalader Wickersham & Taft,
LLP. Details will follow.
Please consider becoming a mentor to both a student and/or a new graduate.
In this time of great changes within the legal community, our students
and new graduates, the future representatives of Brooklyn Law School in
the legal world, will benefit greatly from the support and guidance Brooklyn’s
alumni base can provide. I know you will find the experience worthwhile
and rewarding.
In addition, your participation in the mentor program will be recognized
by the Brooklyn Law School ACES Campaign. For more information on the
ACES campaign,

To become a mentor,
click here to complete and submit a short application. Please do so no later than
September 8th. If you have any questions about the program, contact me at

We anticipate a wonderful year for the Mentor Program. Be a part of it.
Sincerely,
Susan D. Bainnson, Esq.
