Construction, Checks Continue to Roll Out Following Administration’s Initial Efforts to Cut Red Tape and Streamline Relief

Mayor Bill de Blasio will outline the recommendations of a report on the overhaul of the city’s response to Hurricane Sandy. The report will detail reforms to speed recovery and expedite relief for homeowners, and will be unveiled in an event on Thursday, April 17th.

The Mayor’s Sandy recovery and resiliency team has completed and presented the Mayor with this comprehensive diagnostic report, which includes detailed updates and recommendations regarding housing and business recovery programs, and plans to innovate toward a stronger, more resilient New York.

Based on the report, the Mayor will announce major changes that will provide financial relief to homeownersincluding an expedited pre-construction program and expanded reimbursement eligibilityas well as engage local communities directly in rebuilding through partnerships with community groups and creating local jobs.

This announcement follows a number of other improvements the administration has already made to cut red tape and streamline the recovery process, resulting in a dramatic increase in homeowners moving through the rebuilding and reimbursement processesincluding the first construction projects starting and the first reimbursement checks going out to homeowners in need. The Mayor has also appointed a new leadership team to steer the city’s relief, recovery, and resiliency efforts.
