IN LIU OF GOVERNMENT SHUTDOWN?

COMPTROLLER LIU ON SHUTDOWN OF THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT

NEW YORK, N.Y. – In the face of the possible shutdown of the Federal Government on Tuesday, City Comptroller John C. Liu made the following statement:

"Once again the nation is facing a shutdown of the Federal Government if an agreement cannot be reached on a funding bill by September 30. Although not every Federal office will close and seniors will continue to get their Social Security checks, this recurring drama must not continue.

"The immediate impact of the possible shutdown on New York City would be limited, but far more serious problems loom in the not-too-distant future if the budget battle is not resolved. If the government shuts down on Tuesday, thousands of Federal employees working in the City, with families to feed, will not get paid. It now looks as though the Senate will send a continuing resolution to the House as early as tomorrow. We urge the House to pass this resolution as is and then use the next two months to work with the Senate on a plan that keeps the government running."
