Yesterday, U.S. Senator Charles Schumer announced over $7 million in Department of Labor funding for two CUNY schools. Kingsborough Community College in Brooklyn will receive over $3.8 million and LaGuardia Community College in Long Island City will receive over $3.1 million. The grants are part of the Trade Adjustment Assistance Community College and Career Training (TAACCCT) Grant Program, which promotes skills development and employment opportunities in fields such as advanced manufacturing, transportation and healthcare as well as science, technology, engineering and math careers through partnerships between training providers and local employers.

“Training our young people today for the jobs of tomorrow will pave the path to keeping New York City at the top of the heap for generations to come. These grants are a game-changer for Kingsborough Community College and LaGuardia Community College because the funds will now provide much-needed career training programs for our New York City students,” said Schumer. “New York City’s Silicon Alley is in need of individuals who excel in math, science, engineering and technology and I am confident that this $7 million investment will be beneficial to New York’s economy and the future of these students.”

The Department of Labor announced $474.5 million in grants to community colleges and universities around the country for development and expansion of innovative training programs. New York’s total funding is over $7 million. Kingsborough Community College will receive $3,855,652 and LaGuardia Community College will receive $3,178,409.

According to the U.S. Department of Labor, TAACCCT provides community colleges and other eligible institutions of higher education with funds to expand and improve their ability to deliver education and career training programs that can be completed in two years or less, are suited for workers who are eligible for training under the TAA for Workers program, and prepare program participants for employment in high-wage, high-skill occupations.
