LIU STATEMENT ON MAYOR’S COMMENT THAT MORE BILLIONAIRES WOULD BE A ‘GODSEND’
New YorkCity Comptroller John C. Liu stated the following today in response to questions regarding Mayor Bloomberg’s comments on his radio show:
"Just one day after a report from the Census Bureau showed that the City’s poverty rate continues to grow and the gap between the rich and poor remains large, Mayor Bloomberg has declared that it would be a ‘godsend’ if more billionaires moved to New York City. It would only be a godsend if the City’s wealthiest residents paid an equitable tax rate. Right now families that make $50,000 are paying the same rate as a family that makes nearly $50 million. The Mayor’s comment shows once again just how out of touch he is with the average New Yorker."
