Dear Friend,
Today New Yorkers celebrate Columbus Day, commemorating the history and achievements of the Italian-American community.
New York City has been home to the Columbus Day parade since 1929 -- the world's largest celebration of Italian-American heritage. It was also a result of the efforts of two great New Yorkers – Fiorello LaGuardia and Franklin Delano Roosevelt – that this October date was designated as Columbus Day.
Our state takes great pride in honoring the continued contributions of our immigrant communities from generation to generation.
As a second-generation Italian-American who has always deeply admired the tenacity and courage of my immigrant grandparents, I am proud and honored to celebrate this day as Governor of New York State. I ask you to join me in paying tribute to the countless men and women whose hope, work ethic, and traditions make this nation great.
Sincerely,
Governor Andrew M. Cuomo
