Weekly Update on Murders and Shootings in New York City

In 2012, New York City saw the lowest number of murders and the lowest number of shootings at any time since comparable records were kept, with 419 murders and 1,374 shootings. Below is a year-to-date update on murders and shootings in 2013. This update is provided every week by the Mayor's Office.
Murders
Through Sunday, October 27th, New York City has seen 89 fewer murders than at this point last year: 273 murders in 2013 compared with 362 murders in 2012 – a decrease of 24.6 percent.
Murders committed with firearms represent 160 of the 273 murders in 2013, 58.6 percent.
Through Sunday, October 27th, the number of murders committed with firearms is down by 53 from last year: 160 in 2013 compared with 213 in 2012 – a decrease of 24.9 percent.
Shootings
Through Sunday, October 27th, New York City has seen 264 fewer total shootings than at this point last year: 926 shootings in 2013 compared with 1,190 shootings in 2012 – a decrease of 22.2 percent.
