WEEKLY UPDATE ON MURDERS AND SHOOTINGS IN NEW YORK CITY
In 2012, New York City saw the lowest number of murders and the lowest number of shootings at any time since comparable records were kept, with 419 murders and 1,374 shootings. Below is a year-to-date update on murders and shootings in 2013. This update is provided every week by the Mayor's Office.
Murders
Through Sunday, November 24th, New York City has seen 76 fewer murders than at this point last year: 303 murders in 2013 compared with 379 murders in 2012 – a decrease of 20.1 percent.
Murders committed with firearms represent 181 of the 303 murders in 2013, 59.7 percent.
Through Sunday, November 24th, the number of murders committed with firearms is down by 37 from last year: 181 in 2013 compared with 218 in 2012 – a decrease of 17.0 percent.
Shootings
Through Sunday, November 24th, New York City has seen 258 fewer total shootings than at this point last year: 1,010 shootings in 2013 compared with 1,268 shootings in 2012 – a decrease of 20.3 percent.
