
Weekly Update on Murders and Shootings in New York City

In 2012, New York City saw the lowest number of murders and the lowest number of shootings at any time since comparable records were kept, with 419 murders and 1,374 shootings. Below is a year-to-date update on murders and shootings in 2013. This update is provided every week by the Mayor’s Office.
Murders
Through Sunday, November 17th, New York City has seen 79 fewer murders than at this point last year: 294 murders in 2013 compared with 373 murders in 2012 – a decrease of 21.2 percent.
Murders committed with firearms represent 174 of the 294 murders in 2013, 59.2 percent.
Through Sunday, November 17th, the number of murders committed with firearms is down by 41 from last year: 174 in 2013 compared with 215 in 2012 – a decrease of 19.1 percent.
Shootings
Through Sunday, November 17th, New York City has seen 263 fewer total shootings than at this point last year: 985 shootings in 2013 compared with 1,248 shootings in 2012 – a decrease of 21.1 percent.
