As the deadly snow storms that have already hit the Great Plains illustrate, winter is coming. It won't be long before much of the country is buried under a blanket of white.
This is the time of year equine rescues and sanctuaries stock up on hay for the entire winter. Through grants, the ASPCA supports these groups, ensuring that horses don't suffer and starve—but we need your help to do it.
Many horse caretakers, especially those in the northern states, have to stockpile up to five months' worth of food for their equines. This is an expensive proposition. In spite of 2013 being a decent growing year, hay prices, which skyrocketed last year in response to drought-related shortages, have not gone down. A few years ago, a square bale of hay cost $4-8. Today, the same bale averages $8-15, with some areas paying as much as $25 per bale.
When equine rescues, sanctuaries, and hay banks serving needy horse owners reach out to the ASPCA for help, we are able to be there for them—thanks to your compassion and generosity.
As you budget your holiday spending and pick out the perfect gifts for everyone on your list, please remember the horses who are out in the cold this winter. Please consider donating to the ASPCA so we can feed hungry horses and protect other companion animals from suffering and cruelty.
