Sunday Meeting - Taking Renewed Aim at the Second Amendment: Gun Violence in the Wake of Newtown
05/19/2013 - 11:15am
Ceremonial Hall
Gerald Ranck, Music Director
The national revulsion at the carnage at Sandy Hook last December has survived rather longer in the media than have previous mass killings in an America still confused and somewhat paralyzed over its attitudes toward gun control on one hand, and unlimited individual gun rights on the other.
A fresh look at constitutional issues and some new and fresh suggestions on how to ameliorate the recurrent tragedies caused by gun violence may offset the frustration that little if any progress has been made in the ten years since I gave a talk on this topic at Ethical Culture. Can we wean a corrupt Congress and a diffident executive from the stranglehold of the NRA? Can we stimulate sufficient passion to effect a grass roots movement to change our divergent attitudes towards guns and the Second Amendment? I will offer some answers, and hopefully, some solutions to this challenging and recalcitrant problem.
