Schumer: Ti Kala Nea! Greek-Language Provision is a Win-Win for New York’s Vibrant Greek-American Community
Yesterday, U.S. Senator Charles E. Schumer announced that his amendment to help preserve Hellenic language and culture in American will be included in the Senate’s comprehensive immigration bill. The Schumer amendment will allow Greek nationals to apply for a visa to work in the United States to provide Greek language instruction and assistance to communities, educational institutions, and businesses. There are many exchange programs, international litigation cases, language class, travel agency tours, etc. that require Greek speakers to be stationed in the United States for work involving specialized knowledge that requires proficiency in the Greek language.
“As a lead author of the Senate’s immigration bill, I made sure that the legislation would allow for Greek citizens to come work in America to help preserve the Hellenic language and culture here in the United States,” said Schumer. “I believe that this amendment will help the vibrant and valued Greek American community here in New York, the city as a whole, and our entire nation. I was proud to include this provision in the bill, and will fight to ensure it stays there until it is signed by the President.”
This amendment permits Greek or Cypriot individuals to come to the United States for a maximum of 12-months to work in occupations involving specialized knowledge or skill that requires proficiency of a language spoken in countries that admit few immigrants into the United States.
The Schumer amendment allows Greek-Americans to hire Greek and Cypriot citizens to work in America for a year and provide Greek-language instruction and tutoring to the local community on a part-time basis. The amendment helps the Greek-American community preserve its Hellenic heritage and language.
