Get TsunamiReady™: Tips for Communities at Risk
Although tsunamis cannot be prevented, their impact can be minimized through community preparedness. The National Weather Service created a program called TsunamiReady in 2001 to help communities better prepare for tsunamis and strengthen local operations. This week (March 24-30, 2013) is National Tsunami Awareness Week, which is dedicated to education on tsunami preparedness. To become TsunamiReady, communities must:
- Establish a 24-hour warning point;
- Develop multiple ways to receive tsunami warnings and alert the public;
- Develop a formal tsunami hazard plan and conduct emergency exercises;
- Promote public readiness through community education; and
- Comply with other TsunamiReady guidelines.
