Dear Lucas,
They're at it again.
It seems like every week Michael Grimm and the Republican leaders in Congress show us just how out of touch they are with the values and needs of the people of Staten Island and Southern Brooklyn.
This week, the House GOP is bringing Paul Ryan's budget plan up for a vote. Ryan's budget is so extreme that it would make Medicare a voucher program! What's more, it shrinks beyond recognition federal funding for transportation, job training, education, and life-saving scientific and medical research.
Instead of growing our economy and making our tax system fairer, the Ryan budget plan puts tax breaks for big oil, and millionaires and billionaires ahead of middle class families and seniors.
It's out of touch and wrong.
Last year, when Ryan floated a similar plan, Michael Grimm said he was "flattered to be associated" with him and voted for the plan.
He's out of touch and wrong.
As the Finance Chairman in New York City, I know what it means to face a difficult economic outlook. I know what it means to have sleepless nights because difficult decisions need to be made over funding cuts. But, after balancing three consecutive budgets, on-time, without raising taxes, and with bipartisan support, I can tell you that leaders don't break the backs of seniors and the most vulnerable to keep tax giveaways for big oil and millionaires and billionaires.
Leaders stand up for people.
It's time for new leadership in Congress.
