LIU STATEMENT ON SEQUESTER
New York City Comptroller John C. Liu stated the following about the across-the-board federal cuts set to begin today:
"If sequestration begins as scheduled and stays in place for a significant amount of time, every New Yorker will pay a price in one way or another—from cuts in school budgets to fewer services for seniors to reductions in homeland-security protection. We hope officials in Washington can find a way to reach an agreement soon, so that families do not have to endure the consequences of their inaction indefinitely. And although New York City is less dependent on federal spending than many other parts of the country, if these cuts stay in effect over the next year, local economic growth will be reduced and the City will need to fill a budget hole of up to $200 million."
