Tish James Secures Key Endorsements from City Council Colleagues
Councilmembers Melissa Mark-Viverito, Maria del Carmen Arroyo, and Sara Gonzalez endorse James
Earlier this week, Councilwoman Letitia "Tish" James' campaign for New York City Public Advocate announced key endorsements from a powerful group of fellow City Councilmembers. Councilmembers Melissa Mark-Viverito, Maria del Carmen Arroyo, and Sara Gonzalez joined a growing list of supporters for James' campaign.
"I've seen, first-hand, how hard Tish works to champion progressive causes and make sure our city continues to lead the way on issues important to working people everywhere," said Councilmember Melissa Mark-Viverito. "She has always stood up for social and economic justice, helping pass the Safe Housing Act which improved the lives of New York City tenants by ensuring that crucial repairs are made in apartment units. I am proud to endorse Tish for Public Advocate and urge my fellow Democrats to join me in voting for her."
Councilmember Maria del Carmen Arroyo said: "There's nothing more important to me than making sure every single community is represented in our government. Tish James understands New York's diverse communities. Among the many things she has fought for in the City Council, Tish has fought for funding for after-school programs and for first responders. I'm confident she'll be a Public Advocate for New Yorkers from every borough. I look forward to working hard to help elect Tish James our next Public Advocate."
Councilmember Sara Gonzalez said: "With our city facing unprecedented challenges and opportunities, particularly in New York's diverse communities like the ones I represent, we need a Public Advocate who can bring our city together. I believe Tish James will be that Public Advocate. Tish has already demonstrated her ability to build coalitions and reach out to every group in the City. I'm proud to endorse Tish because she'll bring the same vision for unity and progress to the Public Advocate's office."
"I am truly humbled to earn the support of some of New York's finest leaders because I understand that we can only move forward, when we're moving together," said Councilmember Tish James. "I'm running for Public Advocate because I know how to make government work for the working-class, not just the wealthy and the well-connected. I've fought for our neighborhoods to get their fair share from large developments, taken on cuts to after-school programs, and worked to improve the quality of education for every single New Yorker. I'll bring the same passion to the Office of the Public Advocate."
Just last week, 32BJ SEIU, the influential labor union which represents 70,000 members in New York City, endorsed James for Public Advocate.
