Schumer: Amherst Can Bank on 175 New Jobs Thanks to Citi’s Expansion
Yesterday, U.S. Senator Charles E. Schumer announced that he met personally with Citigroup Inc. Chief Executive Officer Michael Corbat and secured his commitment to add 175 jobs to the company’s Amherst site. Schumer also highlighted that Citi is looking for qualified applicants to fill these positions, in capacities varying from operations and technology to finance and risk and urged local residents to apply.
Schumer stated that in his meeting with the Citigroup CEO, that the bank’s desired job growth in Amherst was a primary topic and that Mr. Corbat announced that the size of the company’s workforce in Western New York would grow to 1,475 employees – a growth of 825 workers from 2007. Schumer noted that much of this expansion in Western New York’s CrossPoint Business Park facility was spurred by a $1,750,000 grant from the Empire State Development Corporation.
“I’m pleased to announce that Amherst can bank on 175 new Citi jobs to fill in Amherst,” said Senator Schumer. “Citi has more than doubled their workforce in Western New York’s CrossPoint Business Park facility over the past six years, and after meeting with Mr. Corbat, I’m hopeful for even further growth down the road, in addition to these 175 new jobs.”
“We are proud to further extend our long-standing commitment to the State of New York. Citi believes that the cost effective location and highly educated workforce in Amherst offers a terrific environment in which to grow our business,” said William Mills, Chief Executive Officer of North America for Citi.
Schumer noted that Citi has been in New York State for over a century and has employed workers in Western New York since 1976, when it started its Buffalo-area presence with 10 employees. Citi employees in Amherst work across several businesses and functions. The Amherst operation is run on a 24/7 schedule as it feeds into Citi’s overall global operations, which span over 160 countries and jurisdictions.
