Get Screened for SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program) Benefits
SNAP, or the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, is the new name for the food stamp program. SNAP provides a monthly benefit that can help with your grocery costs while freeing up precious income for other household needs. You receive your benefits on a plastic card, which works much like a debit card and allows you to buy groceries at participating stores, farmers' markets and other locations.
SNAP is available to help everyone who qualifies, so you will not be taking benefits away from anyone else. You may be eligible even if you own your home, a car, have money in the bank, or live with others. Households with a senior receiving SNAP get an average of $170 per month in SNAP benefits.
If you or a loved one is having trouble making ends meet, you can receive a free prescreening for SNAP and learn about other food assistance options in your area by visiting Lenox Hill Neighborhood House at 331 E. 70th Street (between 1st and 2nd Avenues) on Wednesday, June 28th between 11:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m.
To make the most of your time, bring with you documents that verify the identity of all household members; your address; any income (pay stub, tax return, Social Security award letter); your monthly bills for utilities and rent or mortgage payments; and any unreimbursed medical expenses or child care/dependent care costs.
Please RSVP for a time slot by calling 1-877-926-8300. For more information about SNAP or NYC Hunger Free, please call 1-855-692-4322 or visit NYC Hunger Free's website.
