Lucas,
The status quo is unacceptable.
Yesterday the Senate Armed Services Committee held its first full hearing on sexual assault in the military in a decade. Of the twenty witnesses, only two were there as victim advocates. The other 18 were representing the top ranks of the military and uniformly opposed our efforts to reform the military justice system. Their blanket opposition to common sense reforms to give sexual assault survivors justice makes me more certain than ever how important our voices and advocacy are.
If you haven't yet, please sign our petition today. Click here to watch the coverage in yesterday's NBC Nightly News and add your voice to this fight now.
Just like when we repealed the corrosive Don't Ask Don't Tell policy, we face a tough fight. But like then, we know it is too important to give up. This is not a partisan issue. Both Democrats and Republicans in Congress are working together to fix this injustice - but we won't make this right unless people like you join our fight.
I am inspired every day by the courage of sexual assault survivors who relive their painful memories to help make sure another military member doesn't have to. We must fight for them as hard as we would our own family.
Sincerely,
Kirsten
