LIU ON PASSAGE OF COMMUNITY SAFETY ACT
New York City Comptroller John C. Liu stated the following on the passage of City Council legislation Intro 1080:
"Discriminatory police tactics are flat-out wrong, and the Council's vote today to tighten racial profiling laws and expand protections for LGBTQ and immigrant New Yorkers is welcome and necessary. These protections are especially needed in light of NYPD's continued use of stop and frisk.
"The Mayor presents a false choice when he argues that New Yorkers have only two options – higher crime or discriminatory profiling. I have every confidence that we can keep people safe without violating basic rights."
