LIU LIVES ON $31.50

Dear Friend,

According to the Food Bank, for 1.9 million people in New York City and 47 million across the United States, food stamps are a lifeline. It is a struggle to keep your family healthy with a limited budget. And, if you are on food stamps, you have to get by on an average $1.50 per meal -- many spend more than that just on morning coffee.

I've taken foodbanknyc.org's Food Stamp Challenge by pledging to spend no more than $31.50 on all the food and drink I will consume over the next week, or an average of $1.50 per meal. It will be rough going for the next week, but I realize that for nearly two million fellow New Yorkers, it's been rough for a lot longer than a week.

Would you consider the challenge too? Take the challenge

Sincerely,

John Liu

P.S. I went shopping for food on the first day of the Challenge. This and the remaining $8.11 must last me for one week.
