END RACIAL PROFILING

Dear Friends,

StopFriskStat1-01.pngNo one should be stopped by the police simply because of the color of their skin. No matter how you look at it, racial profiling is wrong.

Last month my office released a report analyzing stop-and-frisk data from 2012 and found that stops by the NYPD involving African-American and Latino New Yorkers were significantly LESS likely to result in weapons or contraband.

Racial profiling is happening on our streets every day. The overuse and misuse of stop-and-frisk invites it. This has to stop.

After months of pushing by clergy, advocates and elected officials, a law barring racial profiling by law enforcement is poised to hit the floor of the City Council. This is no small victory—it's the first time a bill opposed by City Council Speaker Quinn will be cleared for a vote.

But we're not out of the woods yet. We need your help to be sure this vital bill passes, and isn't watered down in the process.

Thank you for your continued support.

Sincerely,

Bill de Blasio
