FOXWOODS TEAMS UP WITH NEW YORK DEVELOPER TO BUILD WORLD- CLASS CATSKILLS DESTINATION RESORT CASINO
Muss Development joins with Casino Giant to Develop 500 Acre Site Adjacent to Former Grossingers' Property
Foxwoods Resort Casino President and CEO Scott Butera and Muss Development LLC President Joshua Muss, have signed an agreement to form a partnership that is prepared to build a $300-600 million destination resort style casino and hotel on 500 development ready acres adjacent to the site of the former Grossinger's Hotel in Liberty, New York. The project would produce thousands of construction and permanent jobs for residents throughout the Catskills, including Sullivan and Delaware Counties. Once state and local approvals are in place, the site could be construction ready in months.
"This is a perfect match for us," said Butera. "Our long-term growth plans include the development of new destination resort casinos called for in the Governor's plan, and this site is exactly what we're looking for in terms of size and location."
"The Muss tract is just 90 minutes from the largest city in the U.S., making it a natural draw for our entertainment services," Butera continued. "The location's spectacular natural setting will attract national and international clientele. Add to that the experience, reputation and financial strength of one of New York's top developers, and we think we can put together the most viable proposal to bring tourism and economic growth to Upstate New York."
Foxwoods, which has recently restructured its operation in Connecticut and owns and operates North American's largest destination resort casino, is looking to expand to the New York market. Mr. Butera and Mr. Muss have been meeting with officials in Albany and in Liberty to discuss their joint venture.
"We're long-term players and have held this site for years in the hope of finding the right partner at the right time," said Joshua Muss. "Foxwoods brings the development, gaming and resort expertise to truly produce a first class experience. Our acreage is situated perfectly for a large scale gaming and resort project, with additional development possible for workforce and resort style housing. We look forward to working with the Village and Town of Liberty as well as other elected officials and state entities charged with making this a reality."
On Wednesday, Governor Cuomo introduced legislation to authorize three destination resort casinos in Upstate New York, including one in the Catskills region. Several members of the state legislature have proposed locating more than one destination resort casino in the Catskills region, including Sullivan County. The Legislature has in the past authorized three casinos in the Catskills. Whatever plan is ultimately adopted by the legislature and signed by the Governor would be subject to voter approval in November.
"Recognizing the job-creating economic development potential of more than one casino, the legislature previously approved a plan to site three casinos in the Catskills," Butera said. "For the Catskills to realize all the economic benefits of a true gaming destination, more than one resort casino should be allowed to operate there. We will continue to work with the Governor's office and members of the Legislature to make it happen."
