LIU STATEMENT ON DOMA RULING
NEW YORK, N.Y. – City Comptroller John C. Liu stated the following in response to the Supreme Court's ruling in United States v. Windsor:
"Today's Supreme Court ruling, striking down Section 3 of the federal Defense of Marriage Act, the portion which denies federal benefits to same-sex couples, is a victory for all Americans. Finally, the Court has recognized that all legally married couples should be entitled to the equal protection of the law regardless of their sexual orientation. Thanks go to the many LGBTQ advocates in New York City and across the country who refused to rest until all were afforded equal rights under the law."
