About the Writopia Children’s Poetry Festival at NYCPF 2013:

For young wordsmiths, or for kids new to penning their own poems, the Writopia Children’s Poetry Festival (July 27th and 28th, Colonel’s Row, Governors Island) is the perfect way to experiment with word play. Open to all ages, children will able to join in group and individual poetry games, help us plant a poetry garden, and listen to our favorite children’s poetry read aloud. After they’ve written their own poems, they will have the opportunity to read their work on a dedicated children’s stage.

About the Ring of Daisies Open Mic:

The Ring of Daisies Open Mic takes place inside a literal ring of daisies! Signup will take place from 11am-1:30pm each day at the information table. The readings themselves will run from 2pm-4pm each day. Please limit yourselves to 5 minutes each!

About the Spontaneous Generation House:

Spontaneous Generation House is a space for gathering the energy of the festival into new collectively written work. All are invited to share the words and ideas they find to inspire them from the New York Poetry Festival. Poet Ashton Winslow will facilitate workshops to elicit your contributions and provoke your creative impulses. There will be materials for writing and drawing, transcribing and editing the poems that emerge. As a portfolio takes shape, written by everyone, you can then come to help read and perform the poems on a stage built out of your own words from the day. Come be part of it.

About The Poetry Brothel:

The Poetry Brothel is a unique poetry experience that places poetry in the lush interiors of a bordello. The Poetry Brothel presents poets as courtesans who offer one-on-one, private poetry for cashmoney. Central to this experience is the creation of character, which for poet and audience functions as disguise and as freeing device, enabling The Poetry Brothel to be a place of uninhibited creative expression in which the poets and clients can be themselves in private. The Poetry Brothel also explores and creatively responds to the tendency of poets to undervalue themselves inside the creative marketplace by providing a seductive and intimate means of confirming for writers and audience alike the literal value of such work. In the spirit of the New York City Poetry Festival, The Poetry Brothel poets will be offering private readings completely free for the weekend. The Poetry Brothel poets will perform publicly from 12:10-12:40pm on The Algonquin stage on Saturday. If one of them particularly speaks to you, they will all be available for private readings in The Poetry Brothel tent for the rest of the festival.
