Dear Lucas,
My wife and I love our son more than anything. No different than parents all over. But the truth is only some parents have to worry about suffering the kind of tragedy, and the failure of justice, that Trayvon Martin's parents have.
That is a searing injustice that we all must fight. The jury’s verdict in the Trayvon Martin case is a shocking reminder that justice is too often still delayed and denied.
The Trayvon Martin tragedy, like Newtown, Aurora, and Tucson, are terrible reminders of the daily tragedies suffered in our city and others, and of the fact that there is so much more we can do to keep guns off our streets.
With each unnecessary instance of gun violence, I get angry. Angry because George Zimmerman gets his gun back. Angry because the NRA stands in the way of common sense background checks. Angry because large corporations back a front group that supports "stand your ground" laws like the one in Florida. And angry because Trayvon's family was denied justice.
It's time we put an end to these tragedies once and for all.
Today, the most important thing you can do to keep our streets safe is to sign the NAACP's petition calling on the Department of Justice to bring civil rights charges to ensure justice is done.
Thanks so much,
Daniel
