Lucas,
While we may never know the full details of the day Trayvon Martin was killed, what's clear is that Florida's NRA-supported Stand Your Ground law helped set George Zimmerman free.
Starting in 2005, the NRA successfully lobbied Florida, along with 21 other states, to pass broad self-defense laws. In Florida's case, this law enables "neighborhood watchmen" like Zimmerman to shoot a suspected threat with no duty to retreat.
These laws are dangerous. A 2012 National Bureau of Economic Research study found a "significant increase in the number of homicides" in the 22 states that passed expanded self-defense laws.
Carolyn knows that justice cannot be served until victims are protected. That's why she's working to defend future victims by opposing efforts to bring a Florida-style law to all 50 states.
This case exposed the tattered patchwork of state gun laws – and just how big of an impact they can have. Florida's lax gun laws even allow Zimmerman to go right back to carrying a concealed weapon.
Carolyn will continue to fight against the expansion of Florida-style Stand Your Ground laws to more states. You can help by adding your voice.
Thank you for your support,
Peggy May
