When the Farm Bill passed the House this month it completely eliminated the SNAP program – a nutrition program formerly known as food stamps that provides hard-working New York families with assistance when they need it most. The saddest statistic is that the majority of the people who rely on this program are children and seniors.
But while the Republican majority refused to help our most needy, they had subsidies built into the Farm Bill for themselves. In 2012 alone, more than $200,000 in these subsidies were handed out to Members of Congress and their spouses. Since 1995, nearly $7 million has been doled out to these Members.
We need to protect our most vulnerable citizens. If you are as outraged as I am, please add your name to my petition and tell the GOP leadership to step up and restore funding to the SNAP program.
