Statement from Carlo A. Scissura, President & CEO of the Brooklyn Chamber of Commerce, regarding Governor Andrew Cuomo's Proposed 2013-2014 Executive Budget:
"The Brooklyn Chamber of Commerce commends Governor Andrew Cuomo for his proposed 2013-2014 executive budget, which includes no new taxes or fees, raising the minimum wage, and money set aside for Hurricane Sandy recovery. Governor Cuomo's budget maintains fiscal responsibility with an eye towards economic growth. In addition to his efforts to improve the State's economy, the governor's proposal to raise the minimum wage from $7.25 an hour to $8.75 an hour -- to keep up with the cost of living -- would go a long way in helping put more money in the pockets of New Yorkers while also stimulating the economy. Even in these tough economic times, the budget sets aside $21 billion to help victims of Hurricane Sandy. That money would directly help residents and businesses in Brooklyn recover and rebuild. Also, there is plenty in the plan aimed at economic recovery. The proposal to extend the Empire State film production tax credit of $420 million a year for an additional five years would add jobs and supports the efforts of Steiner Studios and Broadway Stages to grow film and TV production in Brooklyn and solidify the borough as the media capital of America. We also praise Governor Cuomo for his continued support of SUNY and CUNY since both are at the cutting edge of innovation in the film, biomedical, and tech industries."
