Lucas,
I'm proud to report that Public Citizen's supporters responded to my email Thursday - about the next Supreme Court case that could severely sabotage our elections - the way you always do:
With unadulterated resolve.
You and I know what Public Citizen has to do.
And we can do it thanks to the depth of your commitment.
If you weren't yet able to read my earlier note, I hope you'll give it a few minutes now.
A tough battle is about to get a lot tougher.
We're going to need your help. If you can, one way to help is by making a contribution today.
Thanks,
Robert
Lucas,
How many more body blows can our democracy withstand?
Two days ago, the U.S. Supreme Court — signaling that it may double down on its disastrous Citizens United ruling — agreed to hear another campaign finance case this fall that could send our democracy reeling.
The case is called McCutcheon v. Federal Election Commission.
At stake is whether the Supreme Court will overturn its previous decisions that allowed limits on the amount of money individuals can contribute directly to political candidates, parties and PACs.
To recap: Citizens United undid important restrictions on how much corporations can spend to interfere with elections; now McCutcheon could undo restrictions on how much billionaires can flat-out give to politicians who will do their bidding.
If we work together, we can overcome the onslaught of threats facing our democracy. But it will take all the resources we can muster. Please make a contribution today.
How has our nation strayed so far from "of the people, by the people, for the people"?
We can't say for sure now, but McCutcheon could be another
Citizens United.
You know how far we've come in our campaign against Citizens United over the past three-plus years.
We absolutely will not let McCutcheon dismantle our democracy without a fight.
Do what you can to win the fight. Contribute right now.
Public Citizen is already preparing a brief to file with the court in McCutcheon. And our campaign finance experts and organizers will be doing everything we can to make sure common sense prevails.
If the Supreme Court again rules in a way that undermines our democracy, we will bring to bear all of our power — the power that comes from the hundreds of thousands of informed and engaged people like you who make up Public Citizen — to confront that challenge head on.
Those charged with safeguarding our most cherished institution — the democracy that is the foundation of our country — should know that elections are not the same as auctions.
I, for one, intend to stand up for democracy. And I know you stand with me.
Contribute now.
If we're together, we can't lose.
Onward,
Robert Weissman
President, Public Citizen
P.S. Next week, the Supreme Court will consider whether it will hear still another case, U.S. v. Danielczyk, which challenges a century-old ban on direct corporate contributions to candidates. We could be facing an all-out assault on critical campaign finance laws. Please donate as generously as you can to the fight.
