How many more body blows can our democracy withstand?
Two days ago, the U.S. Supreme Court — signaling that it may double down on its disastrous Citizens United ruling — agreed to hear another campaign finance case this fall that could send our democracy reeling.
The case is called McCutcheon v. Federal Election Commission.
At stake is whether the Supreme Court will overturn its previous decisions that allowed limits on the amount of money individuals can contribute directly to political candidates, parties and PACs.
To recap: Citizens United undid important restrictions on how much corporations can spend to interfere with elections; now McCutcheon could undo restrictions on how much billionaires can flat-out give to politicians who will do their bidding.
