On Thursday, February 14, Brooklyn Borough President Marty Markowitz and wifeJamie will fete hundreds of Brooklyn sweethearts who have been married to one another for 50 years or more. The celebration at El Caribe Country Club will also feature the couples renewing their wedding vows.
Among the couples scheduled to attend are:
- A Bensonhurst duo who met in the same small town in Italy are returning for this year's celebration—still together and now married an incredible 72 years
- Also returning this year is a Bay Ridge couple celebrating an amazing 71 years of wedded bliss.
- A Sheepshead Bay husband and wife married for 53 years—they met on his birthday (February 11) and she was born on February 12. This will be a combination Valentine's Day/belated birthday celebration for both
- Joining the party again this year is a former Ambassador to Grenada and his lovely bride, married for 61 years and counting!
- A Sheepshead Bay couple who have hit the 'big 5-0.' Welcome to the club!
In addition to enjoying a champagne toast, the "newlyweds" will dance to the songs of their youth and cap off the festivities with wedding cake and sugar free treats. This year's gathering is the eleventh hosted by BP Markowitz, who happens to celebrate his birthday on Valentine's Day and found the love of his life right here in Brooklyn when he met Jamie in the summer of 1999 on the beach at Kingsborough College. They were married at the Brooklyn Botanic Garden that November.
