LIU STATEMENT ON AFRICAN AMERICAN HISTORY MONTH
City Comptroller John C. Liu stated the following on African American History Month:
"This month we celebrate African American history and the many contributions of African Americans to our City. The incredible journey we have traveled as a nation in overcoming hurdles to the civil rights of African Americans is one in which we can all take pride. And while the overt discrimination of previous generations has waned, we continue to fight against more subtle inequality – whether it is the elevated unemployment figures in our minority communities, the intolerable racial profiling of stop-and-frisk, or the shortage of diversity in our specialized high schools. Each February, we have an opportunity to remember those who fought for civil rights over the course of American history. What better way to honor their legacy than to keep our eyes open to the injustices and discrimination that still remain."
