
Weekly Update on Murders and Shootings in New York City

In 2012, New York City saw the lowest number of murders and the lowest number of shootings at any time since comparable records were kept, with 419 murders and 1,374 shootings. Below is a year-to-date update on murders and shootings in 2013. This update is provided every week by the Mayor’s Office.
Murders
Through Sunday, December 22nd, New York City has seen 84 fewer murders than at this point last year: 329 murders in 2013 compared with 413 murders in 2012 – a decrease of 20.3 percent.
Murders committed with firearms represent 191 of the 329 murders in 2013, 58.1 percent.
Through Sunday, December 22nd, the number of murders committed with firearms is down by 45 from last year: 191 in 2013 compared with 236 in 2012 – a decrease of 19.1 percent.
Shootings
Through Sunday, December 22nd, New York City has seen 272 fewer total shootings than at this point last year: 1,077 shootings in 2013 compared with 1,349 shootings in 2012 – a decrease of 20.2 percent.
