"Why Study Math?" Show Them How Math Saved Lives in 1854
We've all heard students ask, "Why do we need to study this?" Sometimes students have trouble understanding how what they are learning in school is important and can be used in real life to understand and solve problems. Here are 2 videos that demonstrate the value of math.
In the first video, students learn about a crisis in 1854 in London. People were dying and no one understood why. Someone applied math to the problem to figure out what was causing the deaths and it saved many lives. In the second video, students learn why we study statistics and the type of answers we get from looking at large quantities of data.
