UNFINISHED BUSINESS

Lucas --

Fifty years ago, hundreds of thousands of Americans gathered for the March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom. They made a powerful statement that the inequity of the status quo went against our national values.

How far we've come in the decades since. And how far we still have to go.

This morning, I'm writing from Washington, DC, where Chirlane, Chiara, Dante and I are joining a new generation of civil rights leaders for the March to Realize the Dream.

Because we have unfinished business at home.

Today in our city, there is a boundary line between the elite and millions of everyday New Yorkers -- those who struggle to find good jobs and quality schools; those denied fair and equal treatment under the law; those who can’t find affordable housing and need health care; those who don’t have access to early childhood and after-school programs that set our children on the right path -- and keep them there.

We're living a Tale of Two Cities.

But 17 days from now in the Democratic Primary, New Yorkers face a choice about how we move forward.

We can choose a continuation of the Bloomberg years, where a widening chasm of inequality divides and defines us. Or we can acknowledge the central challenge of our moment -- the unfinished business of inequality -- and choose to fix it.

What we do over the next 17 days will determine the kind of New York we live in and our children inherit. I ask you to stand with me now, and help build one New York, where we all rise together:

Together, we will ensure that every New Yorker can realize the dream of our city.

Thanks,

Bill
