SHOW ME THE SPENDING

Friends,

It only takes a brief glance at national headlines to see evidence of waste and overspending on a federal level. Or news of abusive, unsustainable liberal policies wrecking large-scale havoc on notorious cities like Detroit.

But what about your state, or your city? The same math that brought Detroit to its knees is at work across the states. The pension system in Charleston, WV is so underfunded that it pays retirees straight from the city budget. And then there's cities like Santa Ana, CA, set to pay its new city manager more than $500,000 annually.

Words like "unsustainable" and "fraud" come to mind. As an activist group in Maryland wrote this week, protesting their city government's plans to increase borrowing: "Present promises far outweigh the ability of the people to pay."

Do you know exactly how your money is actually being spent in your state? In your city?

All states combined spend an average of$1 trillion in state revenues per year. Most of your state tax dollars go to education and health. ($164,426 is the full cost of a public K-12 education for one child!) But don't just stop at averages -- spending varies significantly among states. For example, education makes up 10% of West Virginia's budget but 32% in Vermont.

I encourage you to visit Ballotpedia's "Show Me the Spending" to find your state's spending record.
