LIGHTENING UP BROOKLYN

BP MARKOWITZ CELEBRATES PARTICIPANTS OF 12TH ANNUAL "LIGHTEN UP BROOKLYN" CHALLENGE

Yesterday, Brooklyn Borough President Marty Markowitz celebrated the Brooklynites who successfully completed the 12th annual "Lighten Up Brooklyn" Challenge in Borough Hall. The party honored the estimated 350+ individuals who participated in at least ten qualifying free exercise events over the last eight weeks at New York City Parks and Recreations centers located in the borough; this was the first year that this partnership took place. Since Borough President Markowitz first launched the program in 2002, thousands of Brooklynites have taken part in an effort to get healthy and raise self-esteem.

"There's no question that the obesity epidemic is one of the greatest problems facing Brooklyn and America," said Borough President Markowitz. "The only way to beat this epidemic is to educate parents and their children on the importance of exercise and choosing healthier foods. You know the old saying 'an apple a day keeps the doctor away' – well here in Brooklyn we got a new one – 'exercise and fewer pies keeps weight off those thighs.'"
