Schumer Officially Recommended Broderick for the Bench in November; Would Be the First Dominican American Federal Judge in NYS, And Also Has Roots in Jamaica

Broderick, Educated at Harvard and Yale, Has Had Extensive Legal Experience in the Private and Public Sector, Having Served In the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of NY

U.S. Senator Charles E. Schumer announced yesterday that President Obama has nominated Vernon Broderick to serve on the United States District Court for the Southern District of New York. Schumer recommended Mr. Broderick to President Obama in November and today praised the President for this nomination. Pending Senate confirmation, Broderick would be the first judge of Dominican heritage on the federal bench in New York State.

“I am pleased that President Obama has nominated Mr. Broderick to the District Court,” Schumer said. “Mr. Broderick is a proven leader, and I have every confidence that his years of experience in both the public and private sectors will translate into a very successful career as a judge.”

Mr. Broderick is a graduate of Yale University and Harvard Law School. He served as an associate at Weil, Gotshal & Manges, LLP, working on a variety of civil litigation matters. Mr. Broderick entered public service in 1994 in the U.S. Department of Justice as an Assistant United States Attorney for the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of New York. There, he handled criminal investigations and prosecutions, with a focus on complex narcotics and gang prosecutions. Mr. Broderick also served as Chief of the Violent Gangs Unit for the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of New York from 1999 until 2002.

Besides serving on the board of LatinoJustice PRLDEF, Mr. Broderick is also Chairman of the Board of the Justice Resource Center and a member of the Board of the Fund for Modern Courts.
