HURTFUL SECRETS

Lucas,

Secrets, secrets are no fun. Secrets, secrets hurt someone.

You remember the old playground taunt. What’s truly scary, though, is that there’s a big secret brewing in the U.S. trade agenda — and it could hurt you.

The Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) — aka NAFTA-on-steroids — involving 11 countries is still a mystery three years after negotiations began.

Your representative is one of the few who hasn’t signed onto a letter asking Democratic House leadership to expose the TPP. Ask your representative to add his or her name.

The public, press and members of Congress have been kept in the dark for too long about what exactly is in this corporate power grab. The few leaked TPP texts reveal threats to offshore more U.S. jobs, flood us with unsafe imported food and raise medicine prices.

Big corporations like Exxon Mobil, Pfizer and Wal-Mart know what’s in this “trade” deal. But your representative doesn’t.

Ask him or her to stand with almost every other freshman House member and sign onto this letter to push for a trade policy that represents Main Street, not Wall Street.

As if the TPP weren’t enough to scare you, some in Washington are looking to revive a Nixon-era power grab procedure called Fast Track. It hands over Congress’ constitutional trade authority to the president. And sadly, President Obama is now one of the leading cheerleaders for the TPP.

Congress needs to be in the driver’s seat for trade negotiations so your voice can be heard.

Tell your representative to add his or her name to this letter today to open the TPP texts and preserve Congress’ constitutional trade authority.

We can’t afford another NAFTA.

Together, we can stop future damaging “trade” deals.

Thanks for all you are doing.

I’ll be in touch soon,

Maggie Henderson
