There's been a lot of talk in the news over the past week about Americans who are receiving public assistance. At the No Kid Hungry campaign, we work tirelessly every day of the year to protect nutrition programs like SNAP -- especially for the 1 in 5 kids who face hunger across America.
Major cuts to SNAP funding are under consideration in Congress. The cuts would be devastating to children facing hunger and we are counting on you to help protect this critical program. Many regular, everyday people have relied on federal programs like SNAP (food stamps) at some point in their lives. SNAP and other programs are vital to families when life throws them a curveball -- be it a disappearing job or a medical emergency.
There's a common misconception that once you're on SNAP, you stay on it for life. But that's simply not true. In fact, the average amount of time families spend on SNAP is 9 months. As you watch our video, you'll see that people who've needed SNAP in past years have gone on to become professional athletes, members of Congress and television stars . Though they're now successful, they too grew up members of everyday, hardworking families who at some point fell on hard times.
