Dear Lucas,
Right-wing billionaires like the Koch brothers and casino mogul Sheldon
Adelson are pouring hundreds of millions of dollars into politics in an attempt
to buy the upcoming election.
Unfortunately, the richest of the rich have the loudest voice in politics. And
as long as billionaires and corporations control the agenda, working people
will always be under attack.
But here in New York, we have a chance to take our democracy back.
We're
supporting the Fair Elections plan to limit the power of big money in New York
politics with public financing of elections. Governor Cuomo already supports
the plan, but we need your help to push it through the legislature.
New York has some of the loosest campaign finance rules in America, with the
highest contribution levels of any state that sets a limit. The result is a
system where big contributors bankroll campaigns to grease the wheels for their
agenda.
But believe me, their agenda isn't our agenda, and their values are dangerous ones.
Across the country, billionaires and special interests are spending big to roll back the hard-won rules and protections that built America. They want more tax cuts for the 1%, paid for by cuts to our healthcare, our schools and our jobs. If they have it their way, collective bargaining, Medicare and Social Security could all be no more than memories before long.
Sign our petition to urge the State Senate to pass the Fair Elections plan right away.
New Yorkers deserve elected officials who listen more to voters than to a handful of wealthy campaign donors. We deserve elected officials who care about the struggles of working families.
Best,
