Dear Friends,
As Hurricane Sandy approaches New York City, it is critically important that all New Yorkers begin preparations immediately. Based on current forecast models, storm conditions could begin as early as this afternoon and are expected to intensify over the next 24-48 hours.
To help prepare for Hurricane Sandy, my constituent affairs team has compiled a guide to frequently asked questions that you may have before, during and after the storm.

There is no evacuation order for New York City at this time; however, if you live in a low-lying area and have concerns about flooding or prolonged power loss, consider staying with friends or family outside these potential flood zones. If you cannot stay with family or friends, shelters are now open in public schools around the city. To find out what zone you live in and the location of your nearest shelter visit http://gis.nyc.gov/oem/he/index.html or call 311.
My office will be working in close coordination with the Office of Emergency Management to help keep New Yorkers informed and safe as Hurricane Sandy approaches.
Here are 5 things that you can do right now to prepare:
- Find out if you live in a hurricane evacuation zone
- Have a "Go Bag" ready in case of evacuation
- Prepare an Emergency Supply Kit for your home
- Enroll in Notify NYC to receive emergency updates via text message or email
- Make a plan with your family in case you need to evacuate or become separated
If you and your family are safe and would like to help by keeping an eye out for the needs of your neighbors and your community, click here to sign up as part of our volunteer Storm Watch team.
Be prepared and stay safe.
