Public School 280, at the corner of 35th Avenue and 94th Street, in Jackson Heights, occupies the same building that from 1932 until 2010 was Blessed Sacrament School. The principal of that school from 1967 to 2002 was Sister Mary Patrick McCarthy, G.N.S.H.
Sister Mary Patrick's love of Jackson Heights, Blessed Sacrament Parish and School, and 94th Street, was not shaken by the many social and cultural changes the neighborhood underwent throughout the years. Instead, it made her all the more committed to serving her pupils and her community.
She was welcoming of the immigrant community and worked to help with their integration, especially when there were great linguistic, cultural, and financial difficulties.
In the Spring of 2002, when she was nearing her thirty-fifth anniversary as principal, a rapid onslaught of cancer brought her life and career to an end on June 17. Her death brought great sadness to the parish and to the Jackson Heights community.
