Governor Cuomo Secures First Major Private Donation to Support New Yorkers in Recovery Effort
Yesterday, Governor Andrew M. Cuomo announced that New York State has secured the first major private donation from PepsiCo and Walmart to support New Yorkers in their recovery efforts after Hurricane Sandy.
“State government is using every resource available to help New Yorkers recover from the damage and loss left by Hurricane Sandy,” Governor Cuomo said. “But there is always more that is needed, so private donations like these from Walmart and PepsiCo provide vital help to our families whose daily lives were impacted by the storm. I thank PepsiCo and Walmart for their generosity.”
“The PepsiCo family knows that many of our fellow citizens urgently need help, and we stand ready to do our part,” said PepsiCo Chairman and CEO Indra Nooyi. “We applaud Governor Cuomo for his leadership and are donating significant quantities of our diverse food and beverage products to help as many impacted communities as possible.”
“Hurricane Sandy caused unspeakable devastation for millions of people,” said Gisel Ruiz, Chief Operating Officer for Walmart U.S. “Moments like this demand that we all come together – business, government and community – to help our neighbors rebuild their lives. Walmart is committed to doing its part to help with the recovery effort and will continue to coordinate closely with leaders like Governor Cuomo to help ensure that those who have been impacted have what they need to get through this difficult time.”
Walmart donated six trailer truck loads of 60 pallets of dry food and beverages, 5,895 cases of cleaning supplies and 2,051 board games. PepsiCo donated five trailer truck loads of beverages and three trailer truck loads of snacks, totaling more than 100,000 cases of products. In addition, PepsiCo has committed to donating another 22 trailer truck loads of similar supplies over the next week.
These donations were loaded into National Guard vehicles today and will be distributed to New Yorkers in need throughout the affected regions. The Governor was at the Javits Center in Manhattan this afternoon to help load the donations.
The Governor also today named Secretary of State Cesar Perales to serve as the State’s Coordinator of Corporate Contributions. In this position, Mr. Perales will oversee and facilitate other requests from private organizations that want to make donations to help New Yorkers.
